Janelle Monáe needed to ensure everyone’s eyes were on her amid her NBC appearances on Today (posturing with Drew and Jonathan from the Property Brothers) and the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and afterward again at AOL’s Build Live Chat, in googly eye-covered space buns, finish with stunning normal finger waves.

The singer, who’s no stranger to stepping outside of the box and also switching up her strands on the regular, teased her crafty look on Instagram before taping the show yesterday with the caption: “👀 KEEPING THAT 8th EYE OPEN.”

She then went on to post another pic, flaunting her playfully cool style — not to mention a killer cat-eye, teal liner, and hot pink lip look — because googly eyes are fun at any age: “👀👀👀’EVEN WHEN I’M SLEEPING I KEEP 20 eyes open.'”

Janelle then posted a video next to her hairstylist Nikki Nelms (or as her Insta bio states: “Hair MacGyver” — I’d have to agree) responsible for the 👀 look, saying, “I see you. All these eyes around my head, I see you.” I called up the hair-gician, who told she “loves finding more than one purpose for things,” and that she’s obsessed with Michael’s arts and crafts store. “I could literally hang out there for hours,” she said.

So when I asked her if she was inspired by a certain designer or what it was exactly that drew her to use the googly eyes, she said:

I just felt like I should use them. I had a shoot with Janelle the day before yesterday, so I went to Michael’s before it to look around. I was feeling a little pop art-ish at the time, saw the eyes, and I thought they were really cool, but I wanted to get different sizes so they didn’t come off polka dot-ish. So I bought different sizes, grabbed some flexible “U” hair pins, and super glue – I keep the most random of things I my kit – and glued the eyes to the tops of the pins. Then, I popped them in her hair and she loved it. It worked so well for the shoot we did that day, and it looked so, so cool that we just decided to do it again yesterday.
